Which family relationships qualify?

For a foreign national on a Student visa for higher education (graduation and above), the accompanying spouse and minor children may be granted a dependent visa; no dependent visa is granted to parents or other family members of a minor child (under 18) coming on a Student visa, though they may seek another visa type.

Applications are made online in the standard form via indianvisaonline.gov.in, with the applicant present within the jurisdiction of the Indian Mission/Post when applying and when the visa is granted. The dependent visa is co-terminus with the principal's visa (or shorter as the Mission/Post decides), may be extended by the FRRO/FRO co-terminus with the principal's visa subject to no adverse inputs, and dependents may convert within India to a Student/Research visa if eligible. Work rights and a route to permanent residence are not stated.
