Subsidiary protection is granted to those who are at risk of being subjected to the death penalty, torture or other inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment, or may be subject to serious injury due to random violence resulting from armed conflict, should they be returned to their home country.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

It is requested through a claim for international protection made in person in Iceland (border or in-country), verbally if needed: police at Keflavík Airport, the Egilsgata 3 reception centre in Reykjavík, or the nearest police station. Claims from abroad are not processed. Subsidiary protection is decided in the merits examination.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Biometrics are recorded in Eurodac and the responsible state is determined under the AMMR. After the grant, holders may work without a permit. Family reunification is only available after the permit has been renewed once, unless exemptions apply (urgent care, or one year of residence with labour-market activity, secure funds, 80 hours of Icelandic and adequate housing). Renewal requires a new assessment that the conditions still apply. The official source does not state housing or financial support during the procedure.
