Short-Term Residence Permit for Extended Close-Family Visit

A short-term residence permit is intended for foreign nationals who wish to stay in Iceland for more than 90 days

A residence permit on the grounds of a short-term stay may be granted for a maximum stay of 180 days.

A continuous stay in Iceland may not exceed 180 days at a time, and the validity period of the short-term residence permit is determined accordingly. Time spent in another Schengen state is considered equivalent to time spent in Iceland for this purpose.

A residence permit on the grounds of a short-term stay may only be granted once during any 12-month period.

However, a foreign national exempt from the visa requirement may remain within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days after the residence permit has expired.

This residence permit does not entitle the holder to register legal domicile in Iceland.

The Directorate of Immigration requires that the applicant have minimum monthly financial means of: 259.951 ISK

The bank statement must: be certified by the bank itself, and be an original document.

An insurance certificate must be submitted, confirming that you have taken out (purchased) a health and accident insurance that is valid in Iceland, for the duration of your stay in Iceland, with a minimum coverage of ISK 2,000,000.

You need to submit a return ticket or proof that you have the means to pay for your return when your stay in Iceland ends.

If necessary, the Directorate of Immigration may request that you submit a criminal record certificate.

The processing fee is 12.200 ISK

It can take up to six months to receive a decision on a new residence permit application.

You cannot apply for a short-term residence permit to extend your stay in Iceland.

This residence permit cannot be renewed.

If the application is rejected, you have 15 days to appeal the decision to the
