What application progression, residence obligations, family consequences or further citizenship/residence possibilities follow?

Under Article 58 of the Foreign Nationals Act, a permanent residence permit may be granted, without the usual prior-residence conditions, to a foreign national who acquired Icelandic citizenship at birth but has lost or renounced it. The permanent residence permit is applied for digitally online and the Directorate of Immigration decides on it. The Directorate decides whether to cancel the permit when the holder has stayed abroad for more than 18 months in a four-year period, and the permit lapses automatically when the holder's legal domicile has been registered abroad continuously for 18 months. A close relative of a holder of a permanent residence permit under Article 58 may apply for a residence permit on the basis of family reunification, subject to the conditions of Article 55 and Chapter VIII.
