What medical treatment/purpose does the route cover and which applicant role does it address: patient, donor or another medical purpose?

Covers a foreigner who is injured or becomes ill while in Iceland and needs to extend the stay for that reason, where a long-term visa does not apply. The patient applies; the applicant must be 18 or older.

What acceptance, appointment, referral, treatment plan or healthcare-provider documentation is important?

A statement from the applicant describing the purpose of stay must be submitted with supporting documentation, for example confirmation by a healthcare institution in Iceland confirming the purpose of stay.

Statement on purpose of stay In order for the Directorate of Immigration to determine whether a residence permit should be granted on these grounds, a statement must be received from the applicant describing the purpose of stay in Iceland and other documentation in support of the statement (for example, confirmation by a healthcare institution or other parties in Iceland confirming the purpose of stay).

How must treatment costs, living costs and insurance be demonstrated?

Living costs: secure means of support for the whole permit period, minimum ISK 259,951 per month for an individual (ISK 415,922 for a married couple); social assistance, third-party support (outside listed exceptions) and cash do not count. Insurance: health insurance valid in Iceland for at least three months from registration of legal domicile, minimum coverage ISK 2,000,000; such insurance typically does not cover pregnancy and childbirth. The official source does not state how the cost of the medical treatment itself must be shown.

Limits of the record
  • The source does not say how the cost of the medical treatment itself must be demonstrated.

Can a carer/companion accompany the patient? Who qualifies and what separate/linked permission applies?

Yes: a foreigner who is a relative of a person who is injured or becomes ill while in Iceland can be granted the same type of permit; relatives here means spouse, cohabiting partner and parents. It is a separate application on the same legitimate-and-special-purpose ground; the permit itself gives no right to family reunification.

How long can the patient stay, what happens if treatment continues longer, and what official extension or follow-up mechanism exists?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the permitted stay, extension and follow-up rules for treatment.

Limits of the record
  • Searched all extracoes for duration/extension/renewal terms for the legitimate and special purpose permit (illness or injury); 0e1b144ac4aa8f06.txt only says the permit is exceptional and applications are on paper; no other capture covers this permit.

These are the answers currently recorded in the catalogue. A missing or partial answer is not an eligibility decision.
