International Protection through Family Reunification - Sibling of Unaccompanied Refugee Child

A child applying for international protection through family reunification with his/her sibling, who has the status of an unaccompanied refugee child in Iceland, must be younger than 18 when the application is submitted, may not have a spouse,

must live with and be in the custody of its parent that is also applying for family reunification.

The unaccompanied refugee child must have been recognised as a refugee in Iceland before he or she turned 18.

The child's birth certificate must be submitted in a legally authenticated original or as a certified copy of the legally authenticated original

Only custodial parents have the right to family reunification with their children.

If both parents hold custody of a child, a certified consent of the parent not applying for family reunification must be submitted.

Consent of children 15 years and older The applicant must submit a written consent that he or she wishes to live with a parent/parents in Iceland. The consent must be signed by the child and certified by two witnesses.

A person holding custody of a child without being its biological parent, does not have the right to family reunification for the child unless having also adopted the child.

A residence permit based on international protection as the sibling of an unaccompanied refugee child is granted for three years at most, but never longer than the permit of the person on whom the right is based.

You can work in Iceland without a work permit.

The residence permit does not confer the right to family reunification.

You can apply for a permanent residence permit after you have held a residence permit on grounds of international protection for four years.
