What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This is asylum (international protection). Applicants who meet the requirements get refugee status or subsidiary protection together with a residence permit in Iceland.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It covers people facing persecution in their home country, or a risk of the death penalty, torture or inhuman or degrading treatment. It also covers stateless persons on grounds of statelessness.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

The applicant must be present in Iceland, at the border or inside the country, and apply in person; a verbal request is enough. Applications can be made to the police at Keflavík Airport, at the reception centre at Egilsgata 3 in Reykjavík, or at the nearest police station outside the capital area. Applications sent from abroad are not processed.

    Anyone who wants to apply for international protection in Iceland must be present in Iceland, either at the country's border or within it. The application must be submitted in person. It does not need to be in a specific format, and it is sufficient for the applicant to state their request verbally. You can apply for protection with the police at Keflavík Airport upon arrival in the country. Individuals who are already in the country can apply for protection at the reception centre for applicants for international protection at Egilsgata 3 in Reykjavík. It is open during daytime working hours. Individuals located outside the capital area can apply for protection at the nearest police station. Applications for international protection sent to Iceland from individuals who are abroad will not be processed.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Biometric data are recorded in Eurodac; if another participating state is responsible, the applicant is transferred there. Nationals of safe countries of origin normally go through an accelerated procedure. In prioritised processing the applicant is invited to an interview. The official source does not state accommodation, material support or family handling during processing.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The Directorate of Immigration is the competent authority. A Directorate decision to transfer the applicant to another participating state can be appealed to the Immigration and Asylum Appeals Board.
