How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The permit is usually granted for one year at a time, at most two years, and never longer than the sponsoring parent's temporary permit. It can be renewed after 18 if the young person studies or works in Iceland, lives with the parent and is not married or cohabiting. The child may work without a work permit until 18, and the permit can lead to permanent residence. The official source does not describe the application steps.
