What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

This route is an au pair placement: the au pair lives with a host family and may do childcare, take children to and from school and activities, and do light housework (easy cleaning, simple cooking, light shopping). Au pairs must not care for chronically ill children or others in a similar position.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

The host must be a family with children: a married or cohabiting couple, or a single parent. At least one adult must hold Icelandic citizenship or a permanent residence permit. The family must not be related to the au pair and may host only one au pair at a time.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

The placement is proven by a written au pair agreement between the applicant and the host family, on the form issued by the Directorate of Immigration.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

The host family must provide food and a lockable private room with a window. It must pay at least ISK 15,000 per week in pocket money and buy health insurance covering the first six months. Working hours may not exceed 30 per week or 5 per day. The permit gives no right to other work in Iceland, paid or unpaid.

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

The permit lasts as long as the au pair agreement, never more than one year, and may be renewed once for one year. The au pair may sign a new agreement with another host family, submitted with that family's proof of means of support. There is no family reunification, and the permit cannot lead to permanent residence.
