Which travellers require a transit visa/permission and which officially documented exemptions are important?

Citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the People's Republic of Congo (as the source lists it), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia and Sri Lanka need an Airport Transit Visa to transit through an Icelandic airport, whether or not they change planes. Exemptions include: holders of a valid Schengen uniform visa, national long-stay visa or Schengen residence permit; EU citizens' family members; diplomatic passport holders; and flight crew of Chicago Convention states.

Under Schengen rules, transit means only a trip from a non-Schengen state, through a Schengen airport, onward to another non-Schengen state. A traveller flying on from Iceland to another Schengen airport is not in transit: they enter the Schengen area in Iceland and need a Schengen visa before arriving. Holders of refugee travel documents from the USA and Canada need a Schengen visa to travel through Iceland even if they do not leave the airport, if their nationality requires a visa to visit Iceland.

    A person travelling from New York to Iceland and onwards to Berlin (or any other airport in the Schengen area) is not considered to be in transit for the purpose of Schengen rules.
