Can family accompany? How long is the status granted and can it be renewed?
The White Card lasts at most one year and can be extended only once, for up to another year for the same purpose. The extension must be filed in Hungary through Enter Hungary while the card remains valid, after at least 90 days of residence with it in any 180-day period, between 90 and 30 days before expiry. A holder or applicant generally cannot sponsor a family-reunification residence permit. The stated exception is a third-country national child born in Hungary to a White Card holder during the card’s validity, who receives family-reunification residence after birth notification. The OIF says a White Card holder may not receive a national residence card; it also says no other-purpose permit can be applied for during the White Card’s validity or after its expiry. These restrictions do not establish an independent right for a family member to accompany under another basis.

During the period of validity of the White Card and after its expiry,
no other residence permit may be applied for other purpose.

Family reunification
Family members of a third-country national who is a holder of a White Card or or an applicant for a White Card
shall not be granted a residence permit for family reunification.
An exception to this is if a third-country national holding a White Card gives birth to a third-country national child in Hungary during the period of validity of the residence permit, as in this case the child will receive a residence permit issued for the purpose of family reunification after notification on the child’s birth.
