What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

Public interest voluntary activities performed under a voluntary contract concluded with a host organisation defined by Act LXXXVIII of 2005 on public interest voluntary activities qualify, as does voluntary activity carried out in the framework of the European Voluntary Service.

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

Subtype: VOLUNTEER. The residence permit for voluntary activity lasts for the hosting-contract period, up to two years; the travel document must remain valid for at least three months after the approved stay. Extension is possible only from Hungary through Enter Hungary while the current permit is valid, if the holder has resided in Hungary with that permit for at least 90 days in a 180-day period; apply between 90 and 30 days before expiry. The official factsheet does not state a procedure or entitlement to change host organisation or volunteer activity. Family members ordinarily cannot receive a family-reunification permit through this volunteer permit. The stated exception is a third-country-national child born in Hungary during its validity, who receives a family-reunification permit after birth notification. A holder cannot apply in Hungary for a different residence title during this permit or after it expires, and cannot be granted a national residence card on this permit basis.
