Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

A direct, in-person application at the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing; asylum may not be requested by anyone else on the person's behalf, and the first asylum procedure in Hungary is free of charge, including interpreters.

  • chars 10028-10318
Applications for asylum are to be submitted in person at the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing. Asylum may not be requested by others. The Office shall carry out the first asylum procedure in Hungary free of charge, the fees of interpreters are covered by the Office as well.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

The asylum procedure is carried out in 60 days, with a shorter accelerated procedure possible in some cases and the specialist authority's time not counted; if the applicant arrived through one of certain European countries the application will most likely be examined there instead, and the Hungarian procedure is suspended while that determination is made. The official source does not describe registration, family handling or support for applicants during the procedure.

  • The aid and support described on the page are for people already granted refugee status or subsidiary protection, not for applicants.
  • The integration agreement described on the page was abolished as of 1 June 2016 and continues only where already awarded (41af31fd94189ad3.txt[18922:19451]).

The competent authority shall carry out the asylum procedure in 60 days. However, in some cases the authority has power to bring a decision within a shorter period of time, in a so called accelerated procedure. The duration of the specialist authority’s procedure is not included in the 60-day time limit prescribed for the asylum procedure. If the applicant arrived to Hungary through the territory of any one of specific European countries, in all likelihood his/her application for asylum will be examined in that country, rather than in Hungary. To make such determination is a time consuming process, as Hungary is required to contact the refugee authority of that other country. The procedure will be suspended for that duration.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing is the authority that provides support and assistance to people granted refugee status or subsidiary protection, to help them integrate into Hungarian society as soon as possible.
