Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Honduras recognises refugee status for people forced to flee whose life, integrity, freedom or security is threatened for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular social group. Honduras also recognises as refugees people at risk of persecution due to generalised violence, foreign aggression, internal conflicts, massive human rights violations, or other circumstances that have gravely disturbed public order, sexual violence, or other forms of gender-based persecution.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

An asylum request may be made at any INM land, maritime or air delegation, or at a Centro de Atención al Migrante Irregular (CAMI) in Honduras.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After filing, the applicant is interviewed confidentially, biometrics are recorded, and the INM issues a personal, free 'Autorización de Permanencia Temporal' valid for 90 days; it can be renewed while the case is pending. A favourable decision leads to registration in the Registro Nacional de Extranjeros for a refugee identity card.
