What family, citizenship, ethnic, historical or former-resident connection creates access to this route?

The qualifying connection is having previously held Danish citizenship, or being of Danish/Greenlandic descent.

Limits of the record
  • The capture does not state a generational limit, a document list, or a duration for this specific ground -- see r2/r3/r5.
  • same extraction as previous revision
If you have previously held Danish citizenship or are of Danish/Greenlandic descent, Greenlandic immigration regulations permit you to apply for a residence permit.

How far back can the qualifying connection extend, and what important transmission limitations exist?

For the descent ground, the applicant must document that both parents, or all four grandparents, were natural-born Danish citizens, so the reach extends at most to grandparents; the parents need not have retained Danish citizenship, and a descent-based permit can be issued only once. The former-citizen ground excludes those who lost citizenship under Sections 8 a or 8 b of the Danish Citizenship Act.

Limits of the record
  • Descent ground is granted 'normally' (discretionary wording); the form does not define exceptions.

What records are central to proving the lineage or historical connection?

Proof of previous Danish citizenship or of Danish/Greenlandic descent is required. Former citizenship is documented, for example, by the applicant's own or parents' baptismal certificates; descent by the parents' or grandparents' baptismal certificates.

Does the pathway result in a visa, residence permit, right of return, citizenship or another status?

What application progression, residence obligations, family consequences or further citizenship/residence possibilities follow?

A former Danish citizen granted a permit under Section 9(1)(1) of Ordinance No 184 of 14 February 2025 may apply for permanent residence in Greenland before three years of residence, subject to having no overdue public debts above DKK 97,436.38 (2026 level) if over 18. A spouse/cohabiting partner or minor child may join only by meeting all normal family reunification requirements (forms GL/FA1 or GL/FA2). No settlement rule is stated for the descent ground.
