What exact status does accumulated residence lead to?

This route is for someone who already holds a temporary residence permit in Greenland (e.g. on the grounds of family reunification or work/study) and applies for permanent residence.

  • The captured official page does not state every possible edge case for this question; independent review remains pending.

What qualifying residence period is required and when does the period begin?

A spouse/partner reunified by the Immigration Service can normally apply after holding the temporary permit on the same grounds for 3 years; a work/study permit holder, or accompanying family of one, can apply after holding the temporary permit on essentially the same grounds for 7 years. In certain cases, e.g. a former Danish citizen granted a permit under Section 9(1)(1) of Ordinance No 184 of 14 February 2025, one can apply with under 3 years' residence.

Which types of residence count fully, partially or not at all where the official rules specify this?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm which types of residence count towards the qualifying period.

  • Searched 00b034a1614245d7.txt for which residence types count fully, partially or not at all: the page only says the temporary permit must be held on the 'same' / 'essentially the same' grounds, which is in the sentences cited for residence_based_status_seo.r2; no separate counting rule. The current material (continuing requirements, public debt ceiling) belongs to r5 (verifier), which is a 'certa' box and is not touched.

What absence/continuity rules affect accumulation of the qualifying residence period?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the absence and continuity rules for the qualifying period.

  • Searched 00b034a1614245d7.txt for absence/continuity rules for the qualifying period: none. Other pages (work, accompanying family) state lapse rules for time abroad (6 or 12 months), but they concern loss of the permit, not accumulation toward permanent residence, so they are not used here.

What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?

Applications are submitted at a Greenlandic police station or to the Immigration Service. No further renewal step is described once permanent residence is granted; the official source does not state other conditions or loss rules.
