This route is for a young foreign national who wants to learn about Greenlandic language and culture as an au pair, living with and doing ordinary domestic chores for a host family in exchange for food, accommodation and a monthly allowance.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

The host family must consist of at least one adult and a child under 18 registered at the same address; at least one parent must have thorough knowledge of Greenlandic culture; the family must have a significant attachment to the Greenlandic labour market; no member may be supported by public benefits; only one au pair at a time; and the family must take out three types of insurance covering the au pair.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

The placement is proven by a binding au pair contract with the host family, signed by the au pair and both parents; the contract is part of the application form, where the host family fills in the first two parts and the au pair the third.

The au pair receives food, accommodation and a monthly allowance from the host family in exchange for ordinary domestic chores. The residence permit only covers cultural-exchange domestic chores with the host family; it does not allow paid employment outside the host family's home.

As an au pair, you can be granted a residence permit valid for a maximum of 1 year with with the possibility of extension for a maximum of one additional year.
