Which family relationships qualify?

Adopted children count only if adopted by a foreign court decision that is enforceable or recognised in Greece; other children only where legal custody has been assigned to the relevant parent. The official source does not list documents proving marriage or partnership.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Family members get, on application, an individual visa expiring together with the sponsor's; they may not work or carry out any economic activity in Greece; if conditions still hold, a 2-year type I.8 residence permit may be granted to the nomad and family, applied for before the visa expires at the Decentralised Administration.

4. Εφόσον εξακολουθούν να ισχύουν οι προϋποθέσεις της παρ. 2, με απόφαση του Γραμματέα της Αποκεντρωμένης Διοίκησης δύναται να χορηγείται στον πολίτη τρίτης χώρας και στα μέλη της οικογένειάς του άδεια διαμονής πολιτών τρίτων χωρών με επαρκείς πόρους διαβίωσης της παρ. 8 του άρθρου 163 (άδεια διαμονής τύπου «Ι.8»), διετούς διάρκειας, κατόπιν αίτησης που υποβάλλεται πριν τη λήξη της ισχύος της εθνικής θεώρησης, με την επιφύλαξη του άρθρου 8. Η αίτηση υποβάλλεται στη Διεύθυνση Αλλοδαπών και Μετανάστευσης της Αποκεντρωμένης Διοίκησης του τόπου διαμονής του αιτούντος.
