Subsidiary protection status is granted to any person who does not meet the above criteria for refugee status, but there are substantial grounds to believe that he or she runs a serious risk of suffering serious harm in his or her country of origin or former habitual residence, in particular because he or she would be in danger of facing the death penalty or execution, or of being subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment, or because his or her life or physical integrity would be threatened as a result of an international or internal armed conflict.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Any third-country national or stateless person at entry points or in Greece may apply free of charge; initial applications at Reception and Identification Centres or by e-appointment at Malakasa and Diavata.

After the interview the Asylum Service decides; applicants hold a card and may work 60 days after issue; if subsidiary protection is granted, the person can obtain a residence permit and travel document; the subsidiary protection permit is valid 1 year and may be renewed every 2 years.
