Which family relationships qualify?

The spouse or partner and a child who has reached adulthood, admitted for family reunification, after at most 5 years of residence (if not holding a permit on another ground); an autonomous permit may also be granted to persons admitted through family reunification in listed cases, e.g. the sponsor's death where they resided in Greece at least 1 year before it.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The autonomous permit builds on family reunification with a third-country national sponsor who held a Greek residence permit valid at least 2 years with the possibility of acquiring permanent residence. The adult-child rule also covers any third-country national who, on reaching adulthood, resided lawfully in Greece with a final residence title, regardless of the issuing authority.

Limits of the record
  • The article does not use the word "sponsor" for the autonomous permit; the reading that no ongoing sponsor is needed is inferred from the personal nature of the right.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

In divorce, annulment or proven cessation of married life, the marriage must have lasted at least 3 years up to the start of the divorce proceedings (or dissolution by consent), of which 1 year in Greece; alternatively particularly difficult situations such as being a victim of domestic violence while the marriage existed.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance requirements.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Application is filed under the article 85 procedure with the required supporting documents. The autonomous permit lasts at most 3 years; holders may apply at any time during its validity to change permit category. For children reaching adulthood it is a 3-year permit renewable once for 3 more years with only the previous permit required, after which a change of category must be requested. It gives immediate access to dependent employment and to studies at any level; minor children follow the right of the parent with custody.
