Limits of the record
  • The official source does not state the complete answer to this question for this route.

What acceptance, appointment, referral, treatment plan or healthcare-provider documentation is important?

A certificate of acceptance for hospitalisation or treatment from a Greek hospital, stating the estimated duration and estimated cost of the hospitalisation/treatment and, for an adult, whether an escort is needed.

How must treatment costs, living costs and insurance be demonstrated?

Treatment costs: insurance covering hospitalisation and medical care, or, if insurance is insufficient, proof of sufficient own resources to pay all these costs may be accepted. Living costs: proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the stay of the patient and of the companion(s), where required. The permit gives no recourse to the Greek insurance or welfare system.

Can a carer/companion accompany the patient? Who qualifies and what separate/linked permission applies?

Yes. For a minor patient, the parents or those with custody; for an adult patient who needs an escort because of their health problem, the spouse or companion(s). A residence permit may be granted to them on application.

How long can the patient stay, what happens if treatment continues longer, and what official extension or follow-up mechanism exists?

The permit is annual and can be renewed for the same period while the same conditions are met, up to 4 years in total. Change of purpose is not allowed, and the patient and companion(s) must leave Greece after the treatment programme ends and in any case before the permit expires.
