Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor is a third-country researcher holding a researcher permit (art. 110); family members may accompany or follow the researcher, by derogation from the two-year prior-residence rule, and a family permit is granted only if the researcher has been granted a permit.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The sponsor must prove the family relationship; to verify it the authority may call the sponsor to a personal interview and carry out any other investigation it considers necessary, and the application must be accompanied by the documents set by ministerial decision.

  • Cited Migration Code text is the original Law 5038/2023 (FEK A 81/01.04.2023); Law 5275/2026 was checked for amendments to this provision, but other intermediate amendments were not excluded.
  • Required supporting documents are set by the ministerial decision under art. 176 par. 1 of the Code, which was not captured.
  • Art. 84 applies to this route by reference; the route-specific article does not itself describe relationship proof.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

For H.3-F — Family member of a researcher, the original 2023 Migration Code Article 84(2) requires adequate accommodation; stable, regular personal income outside social assistance at least equal to annual net minimum-wage income, increased 20% for a spouse and 15% for each child (with the stated child-increase exception where both spouses reside lawfully in Greece); and full health insurance extendable to the family. Article 112 allows the researcher’s family to accompany or follow despite Article 84(1); its cited derogation does not remove the Article 84(2) support test. These are the rules shown in the dated original Code, subject to later law and individual circumstances.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Family members receive a family-reunification permit that expires together with the researcher's permit, granted within 90 days of the complete application (examined together with the researcher's application if lodged at the same time). Renewal must be requested before expiry. Family members have immediate access to employment and to providing services or work. The family permit is renewed accordingly when the researcher moves to the post-research job-search permit. The official source does not state a route to an independent permit for family members.
