For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

No advance visa is required for nationals the Greek MFA table marks VISA-FREE (ordinary passports), e.g. Australia, Canada and Japan; others, e.g. India, need a visa. For some countries (note 1, e.g. Albania) the exemption applies only to biometric passports. The full nationality matrix is on the MFA page.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

Short stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period for which the traveller justifies the purpose. The Schengen Borders Code's non-exhaustive list of supporting documents (Annex I) refers to business trips; study or other types of training; tourism or private reasons; and political, scientific, cultural, sports or religious events or other reasons.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, counting the 180 days preceding each day of stay; the entry date counts as the first day and the exit date as the last; time under a residence permit or long-stay visa is not counted.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

A valid travel document valid at least 3 months after intended departure and issued within the previous 10 years; justification of purpose and conditions of stay; sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and return/onward travel. Means may be shown by cash, travellers' cheques or credit cards, and sponsorship declarations or host guarantee letters may count where national law provides.
