What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Temporary protection under EU Directive 2001/55/EC (EU Council decision), implemented by a residence permit under § 24(1) AufenthG for the duration of the protection; the person must declare willingness to be admitted in Germany.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Ukrainian nationals; stateless persons and other third-country nationals only if on 24 February 2022 they had international or equivalent national protection in Ukraine, are family members of such persons or of Ukrainians, or lawfully lived in Ukraine with a permanent residence permit.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

No right to choose the Land or place; residence must be taken at the assigned place. Beneficiaries are informed in writing of their rights and duties. The spouse and minor unmarried children get a residence permit if the family unit in the country of origin was ended by the flight and the family member is taken over from another EU member state or is outside the EU and in need of protection. Section 24 permits of Ukrainians valid on 1 February 2026 continue automatically until 4 March 2027. The official source does not state work or social-benefit rights.
