Which family relationships qualify?

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor must hold a valid residence title, specifically: a settlement permit; EU long-term residence; a residence permit under §§ 18d, 18f or § 25(1)/(2) s.1; a residence permit held for two years without exclusion of later settlement; certain permits where the marriage already existed and the stay will exceed one year; a § 38a permit; or an EU Blue Card/ICT card/mobile ICT card.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Reunification is refused for marriages concluded solely to obtain residence or where a forced marriage is indicated; both spouses must be at least 18. The official source does not list the documents required to prove the relationship.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The spouse must as a rule be able to communicate in simple German; family members may work; the permit lasts at most as long as the sponsor's permit and is first issued for at least one year; on breakdown of the marriage it is extended for one year as an independent right after three years of lawful marriage in Germany.
