See recorded sources

What qualifying residence period is required and when does the period begin?

Two years holding a residence title under sections 18a, 18b, 18d or 18g (instead of three) and 24 months of pension contributions (instead of 36), where the skilled worker successfully completed vocational training or a degree in Germany.

Which types of residence count fully, partially or not at all where the official rules specify this?

Periods holding a residence permit for employment as a skilled worker under sections 18a, 18b, 18d or 18g of the Residence Act count. Lawful stay with a national visa counts towards the periods of holding a residence permit, EU Blue Card, settlement permit or EU long-term residence permit.

  • Sources do not state whether earlier study/training residence counts toward the two years for this route.

What absence/continuity rules affect accumulation of the qualifying residence period?

For the German-trained skilled-worker settlement route, §18c(1) shortens the qualifying skilled-work title period to two years after completing German vocational training or a German degree, with 24 months of pension contributions and the other statutory conditions. Under the general §51(1)(6) rule, a residence title expires when departure is for a non-temporary purpose. Separately, §51(1)(7) provides expiry if the holder does not return within six months or a longer return period fixed by the foreigners authority. Section 85 allows an authority to disregard interruptions in lawful residence of up to one year. Therefore a period abroad cannot automatically be treated as restarting every settlement clock; the applicable title-expiry exceptions and the authority’s treatment of an interruption must be checked for the individual case.

What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?

The applicant must hold a job they may fill under sections 18a, 18b, 18d or 18g, and have B1 German, basic knowledge of the legal and social system (usually the "Living in Germany" test), sufficient living space and meet the other section 9 conditions. Application is made by appointment at the local foreigners authority; the fee is up to approximately EUR 150. A residence title lapses, among other cases, when its validity expires or a condition subsequent occurs; the settlement permit of a person with at least 15 years of lawful residence (and of the spouse living with them) does not lapse through departure or absence if livelihood is secured and there is no relevant expulsion interest.
