What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A national residence permit for sustainable integration (section 25b Residence Act) for tolerated persons (Duldung) or section 104c permit holders who have integrated sustainably.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

As a rule, persons who: have stayed at least six years (four with a minor unmarried child in the household) without interruption tolerated, with permission to reside or with a residence permit; commit to the free democratic basic order with basic knowledge of the legal/social order; mostly support themselves through work (or are expected to); have A2 oral German; and prove school attendance of school-age children. Refused for obstructing removal by deception or for serious expulsion interests.

By application: a residence title is granted only on the foreigner's application, unless otherwise provided. The official source does not state where the application is made.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Temporary receipt of social benefits is generally harmless for students/apprentices, families with minor children, single parents who cannot reasonably work, and carers of relatives; livelihood and language conditions are waived for illness, disability or age. The permit is issued and extended for at most two years. Spouse, partner and minor unmarried children living with the beneficiary should also receive a permit.

The local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde) is competent for residence decisions under the Residence Act.
