What exact status does accumulated residence lead to?

It leads to no German residence title: a researcher holding an EU research residence title of another Member State needs no German residence title for a research stay of up to 180 days within 360 days, and BAMF issues a certificate confirming the right to enter and stay for research under short-term mobility.

Limits of the record
  • Catalogue mismatch: short-term mobility is not a status reached by accumulated residence.

What qualifying residence period is required and when does the period begin?

No qualifying residence period is required; instead the stay is capped at 180 days within a 360-day period, and the other Member State's research residence title must be valid for the entire stay in Germany.

  • The sources give a maximum stay, not a qualifying residence period.

Which types of residence count fully, partially or not at all where the official rules specify this?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm which types of residence count towards the qualifying period.

What absence/continuity rules affect accumulation of the qualifying residence period?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the absence and continuity rules for the qualifying period.

What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?

The German host research facility must notify BAMF and the other Member State, submitting proof of the other State's research residence title (Directive (EU) 2016/801), the hosting agreement or contract, a copy of a valid passport and proof that living costs are covered. The researcher may then enter at any time within the validity of that residence title and may do research and teaching at the host facility. If BAMF objects under section 19f(5), the research must stop immediately; afterwards the local immigration authority is competent and changes to the conditions must be reported to it.
