What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

This permit is for people who have successfully completed training in Germany as an assistant or helper in a state-recognised or similarly regulated occupation in health care, and who want to look for work afterwards.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The permit is granted in order to look for work after the training. Once a qualified job is found, the holder can apply for a residence permit for qualified employment without having to leave Germany; a person then employed as a nursing assistant receives a residence permit for other employment under Section 19c(1) of the Residence Act with Section 22a of the Ordinance on the Employment of Foreigners. The official source does not state expressly whether a job offer or employer is needed to obtain the job-search permit itself.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The decisive feature is successful completion in Germany of assistant or helper training in a state-recognised or similarly regulated health-care occupation, provided foreigners are permitted to take up the employment in question under sections 18a, 18b, 18d, 18g, 19c and 21 of the Residence Act. The foreigner’s subsistence must be secured.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

While looking for a job in Germany, the holder is entitled to take up any form of employment to cover living costs, so the permit is not tied to one employer. The official source does not state whether family members can accompany the holder.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The permit is granted for up to 12 months and may be extended once by up to six months if subsistence is secured; it may not be extended beyond these maximum periods. After finding a qualified job the holder can apply for a residence permit for qualified employment without leaving Germany, and a person employed as a nursing assistant receives a residence permit for other employment under Section 19c(1) of the Residence Act.
