What qualifying residence period is required and when does the period begin?

This mobile-researcher route is a German research stay of more than 180 days and at most one year under §18f, for a person who already holds a valid researcher residence title issued by another EU Member State under Directive 2016/801 and presents a valid passport and hosting agreement/contract with a German research institution. The statutory condition is the planned duration of this German stay, not an accumulated number of years of German residence.

What absence/continuity rules affect accumulation of the qualifying residence period?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the absence and continuity rules for the qualifying period.

What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?

Submit a copy of a valid passport and the hosting agreement or contract with the German research institution, plus proof of secure livelihood including health insurance. If applied for at least 30 days before the stay and the other state's title is still valid, stay and work are allowed for up to 180 days within 360 days pending the decision. The researcher and the host institution must report changes. Spouse and children must apply for their own residence permit to accompany a stay over 180 days.
