What education or training is this pathway designed for?

It covers study stays in Germany of up to 360 days by students who already hold a residence title for study purposes issued by another EU Member State. The student must be taking part in an EU or other multilateral programme entailing mobility, or be covered by an agreement between higher education institutions.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

A German higher education institution must admit the student. The host institution notifies the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) on the student's behalf and forwards the admission to study it has issued. The notification must be received in full 30 days before the student comes to Germany.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The stay may last up to 360 days and is covered by the other EU State's residence title for study purposes, which must be valid for the entire duration of the stay in Germany. Staying to study for more than 360 days generally requires an entry visa and a residence permit for studying. A person who successfully completes a course of study in Germany during a stay under section 16c of the Residence Act can be granted a temporary residence permit to look for a job.
