What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Asylum and international protection: the Federal Office (BAMF) examines asylum applications and decides whether people receive protection in Germany, in a regular or a special (incl. accelerated) procedure.

Third-country nationals or stateless persons seeking asylum or international protection who are in Germany or at its external borders; unaccompanied minors can also apply.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

In person, in Germany or at the border: an informal statement of wanting protection to a competent authority counts as the application; it can be made to a border authority, the police, a foreigners authority, a reception facility or an asylum authority; written notice only in exceptional cases.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Personal registration within five days; fingerprints taken from age 6; family members recorded with regard to family unity; obligation to live in the assigned reception facility; benefits in kind plus a monthly cash amount for personal needs.

Competent authorities: border authorities, police, foreigners authorities, reception facilities or asylum authorities; free official legal advice (auRA) must be offered at registration at the latest, where legal conditions are met.
