Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It covers unaccompanied minors (mineurs non accompagnés) applying for asylum; as minors they must be accompanied in administrative steps by an adult designated as their legal representative.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

The procedure is the same as for adults, except that the minor must be accompanied by the legal representative, who can collect the asylum application form from the prefecture on the minor's behalf; the file must be completed in French, signed by the legal representative and sent to OFPRA by post.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

If the file is complete, OFPRA registers it and sends an introduction letter to the minor and the legal representative; both are then summoned to an interview at OFPRA's premises.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

OFPRA provides a downloadable asylum guide for unaccompanied foreign minors in France on its unaccompanied-minors procedure page.
