What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Temporary protection: a special mechanism decided at European level in the event of a mass influx of displaced persons; this exceptional and temporary scheme is authorised by a decision of the Council of the EU, which defines the beneficiaries and its start date.

See recorded sources

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Since 3 March 2022 EU countries have granted temporary protection to Ukrainians fleeing their country at war. In general the scheme covers non-European nationals who flee their country or region of origin en masse and cannot return, notably because of armed conflict, violence or serious and repeated human-rights violations.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm where and how protection is requested.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Ukrainian nationals receive a provisional residence authorisation (APS) that allows them to work. By EU Council decision of 30 July 2026, temporary protection is extended until 4 March 2028. A beneficiary who applies for asylum remains under the temporary-protection regime while the asylum claim is examined.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the competent authority or official help channel.

These are the answers currently recorded in the catalogue. A missing or partial answer is not an eligibility decision.
