What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Subsidiary protection is a form of asylum protection for a foreign national who does not meet the conditions for refugee status.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Subsidiary protection covers a foreign national who does not meet the conditions for refugee status and proves exposure in their country to one of these risks: death penalty or execution; torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; or a serious and individual threat to life or person from indiscriminate violence resulting from an internal or international armed conflict.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Protection is requested as an asylum application, either at the border or from within France (even in irregular stay); the prefecture registers the request, after which the applicant applies to OFPRA, which alone grants subsidiary protection.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

The multi-year card authorises residence and salaried or self-employed work, and the employer does not need to request a work authorisation; it is valid for up to 4 years. Certain family members, such as a spouse or partner already admitted under family reunification, can receive the same card. After obtaining the permit and signing the republican integration contract, the person can be supported in finding a job and housing.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

OFPRA grants subsidiary protection. After obtaining the card and signing the republican integration contract, beneficiaries can be helped to find work and housing by the local OFII unit of their department.
