Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Police or gendarmerie investigators must hear the person first and offer a 30-day reflection period (with a work-authorising 30-day receipt, during which removal is barred); the application is then made online. Specialised associations can assist.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Investigating police or gendarmerie must hear the person before the residence request and offer a 30-day reflection period to decide whether to cooperate with justice; if the period is requested, a 30-day receipt authorising work is issued and the person cannot be removed from France during it. Support includes legal aid, social support and shelter, AME or Puma health cover, the asylum-seeker allowance (Ada) and, if needed, police protection and secure housing. The temporary 'vie privée et familiale' card authorises work and is renewable throughout the criminal proceedings, including appeals.
