What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

A volunteering mission in France of a social or humanitarian nature and of general interest, aiming to promote autonomy and protection of people, strengthen social cohesion and prevent exclusion, or carry out solidarity actions for disadvantaged or disaster-stricken people residing in France.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

The mission must be carried out with a foundation or an association recognised as being of public utility, which must be approved (agrément) to call on volunteers.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

A volunteering contract signed before entering France, a copy of the host's approval decision, a letter committing to leave France at the end of the contract, and a long-stay visa.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

The host association or foundation must provide a certificate that it takes charge of the volunteer (attestation de prise en charge). The official source does not state whether an allowance, accommodation or meals are provided, or whether other work is permitted.
