What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It covers non-EU nationals in irregular stay in France. Procedure and conditions differ depending on whether the job is on the shortage-occupation list: in the general case the prefecture may require at least 7 years' residence; in the shortage-occupation route the applicant must show at least 3 years' uninterrupted residence and 12 months of work in the last 24 months in a shortage occupation and area. The shortage-occupation route is available until 31 December 2026.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

An in-country application filed at the prefecture of the place of residence. In the general case the file includes form cerfa 15186 completed and signed by the employer; in the shortage-occupation route the applicant personally files the work-authorisation request using a downloadable form, without the employer's involvement.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

If the application is accepted, the applicant is summoned to the prefecture to receive the card: a 'travailleur temporaire' card for the contract's duration (fixed-term contract) or a 1-year renewable 'salarié' card (permanent contract). No reply after 4 months is an implicit refusal. In the shortage-occupation track, a complete file earns a receipt authorising work while pending. The official source does not state family handling.
