Is this for a founder, startup entrepreneur, self-employed person, freelancer, company owner or another business profile?

A self-employed person: the Immigration Ordinance lets the Principal Immigration Officer issue a work permit for a limited period to work either for a sponsor or on the person's own account.

What must actually exist or be demonstrated: business plan, company, innovation, clients, contracts, economic activity, job creation or other substance?

Self-employed applicants must submit Annex SE with the Form 3 work permit application (or Form 5b if already in the Falkland Islands), giving full details of a business plan and of their relevant skills and training.

What investment, capital, income, revenue, funding or viability evidence is central to this pathway?

Applicants must give full details of how they will support themselves and any dependants; an applicant without an existing sponsor in the Falkland Islands must evidence sufficient financial resources to cover the full repatriation costs for themselves and any dependants.

What business/self-employed activity may the holder conduct? Are there important restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

The holder may work on their own account as specified in the permit and, in addition, do any Workforce Shortage List work for a person who is not their sponsor and volunteer without pay; the Principal Immigration Officer may also permit work not on the Workforce Shortage List. The official source does not state the family position.

Limits of the record
  • The family position for own-account workers is not stated in these provisions.

What approval/application sequence applies, how long is the status granted, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction is officially stated?

Work permits must be applied for from outside the Falkland Islands unless the applicant holds (or held in the last three months) a work, accompanying dependent or dependent permit, or is lawfully resident through another person's permit or was previously exempt. The permit is for a limited period; its validity may be extended but must not exceed four years in total. The official source does not state a longer-term residence direction.
