For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

A visa is required for non-Eritreans and for Eritreans without a National ID; Eritreans holding an original National ID do not need a visa to enter.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the visit purposes this route covers.

Limits of the record
  • Searched the "Family visit" section of the Embassy visa page for permitted visit purposes; it lists documents only. The resident-reference requirement is evidence (placed in the border-evidence box), not a purpose.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

All Eritrean visas are valid for three months from the date of issue, meaning arrival must fall within three months of issue; once in Eritrea the visa is typically valid for one month and can be extended/renewed by visiting Immigration in Asmara.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The Embassy family-visit checklist requires: proof of a residency permit (Green Card) for non-US citizens, a passport valid at least six months beyond the trip dates, proof of sufficient funds, a reference who is resident in Eritrea and able to go to Asmara Immigration to follow up the request, and, for applicants born to an Eritrean parent or parents and under 24, copies of the birth certificate and the parents' Eritrean ID.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Applications are made online by choosing the visa type and completing and submitting the visa application form and fee, then mailing the original passport to the Embassy of Eritrea in Washington, D.C.; the applicant travels on receipt of the visa. The family-visit fee is $70 plus a $13 photo-printing fee and a $10 services fee; a minimum of 15 business days is required for processing. Once in Eritrea, the visa can be extended or renewed by visiting Immigration in Asmara.

Limits of the record
  • The source does not state the circumstances in which a stay can be extended or the visa type changed; the FAQ only says a visa can be extended/renewed at Immigration in Asmara (cited in the length-of-stay box).

These are the answers currently recorded in the catalogue. A missing or partial answer is not an eligibility decision.
