Which family relationships qualify?

Spouses, life partners, parents and children under 18; relatives of residents up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity must prove the family link.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

A person residing in El Salvador as a temporary or definitive resident, or a Salvadoran citizen (spouse/partner of a Salvadoran, or a foreigner with Salvadoran relatives).

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Spouses: marriage certificate; partners: notarised sworn declaration of free union stating how long the relationship has lasted. Children under 18: application by the legal representative, apostilled or authenticated birth certificate translated into Spanish, special power of attorney from an absent parent, or death certificate if a parent has died.

Si la solicitud de una persona menor de 18 años edad, la suscribe únicamente el padre o la madre deberá presentar poder especial otorgado por el que estuviere ausente. En los casos en que uno de los dos hubiese fallecido deberá presentar original de Certificación de Partida de Defunción debidamente apostillada o autenticada y si está en otro idioma traducida al español.

A notarised sworn statement by the person who will support the family member in El Salvador, stating the commitment, for how long, and how the income is obtained; one declaration may cover a family group.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Application to DGME, answered within 45 business days if complete. The status is granted without work authorisation. Fee options cover up to one or up to two years. A foreign spouse of a Salvadoran keeps temporary residence even after divorce or the spouse's death; a partner in a non-marital union keeps it until it expires.
