Tourist stays cover recreational, scientific, family or religious purposes, with no intention to reside and not for work, study or business. An extension request does not give the right to work.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Tourists may stay up to 90 calendar days. An extension of up to 90 more calendar days may be granted once after entry to El Salvador or the CA-4 region. A second extension of up to 90 days is possible only in cases such as disasters, epidemics, humanitarian matters, public calamity or the best interest of a child.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Extension application, original passport and copies of used pages (Guatemalan, Honduran and Nicaraguan nationals: the identity document used on entry; third-country residents of those countries: valid proof of residence), plus documents proving the purpose of the stay; submitting them does not guarantee approval.

Si se trata de persona de los países de Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua, deberá presentar su documento de identidad, si lo utilizó al momento de su ingreso. En caso de persona extra regional residente en alguno de los mencionados países deberá presentar documento vigente que acredite su residencia.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Apply to DGME at least five business days before the permitted stay expires, otherwise the fine in Art. 231 applies. The fee is USD 25. Advice in person at the DGME Visas and Extensions Department (Final Paseo General Escalón y Avenida Masferrer No. 5019, San Salvador) or visas@migracion.gob.sv.
