Is this aimed at retirees, pensioners, financially independent people, passive-income holders or another profile?

Instructivo F-33 is the definitive-residence procedure for rentistas (persons living on income) and pensioners. It is directed at foreign nationals who reside in El Salvador as Temporary Residents in the Rentista or Pensionado category; the requirements list also contemplates an applicant who applies for definitive residence without having obtained a prior residence.

Which types of income/assets are accepted according to the official source?

Monthly funds received from abroad (foreign pension or foreign-source income), shown by a certificate from a bank or financial institution operating in El Salvador; income from abroad means income not treated as Salvadoran-source income under the Income Tax Law.

What income, savings or financial-resources threshold applies and how does family affect it where officially specified?

Limits of the record
  • The sources state the threshold in minimum wages, not a USD amount.
  • A family uplift is stated only for rentiers (Art. 145), not for pensioners.

Can the holder work locally, run a business or perform other economic activity? What is the family position?

A definitive resident may carry out any lawful paid or profit-making activity, self-employed or employed. Spouse and children under 18 can apply as a family group, with a notarised maintenance declaration by the income holder.

Limits of the record
  • The sources do not say explicitly whether the pensioner/rentier work ban of Arts. 144-145 still applies after definitive residence is granted.

How long is the status granted, what is required for renewal, what physical-presence obligations matter, and what longer-term residence direction exists?

Definitive residence gives the right to stay indefinitely. A pensioner or rentier can apply after holding that status for one year. The residence card is renewed ('refrenda') for one to four years at a time, within thirty calendar days before expiry; the right to reside is lost if not renewed within a year after expiry. The holder may be abroad for up to two years. Foreigners of any origin may apply for Salvadoran nationality by naturalisation after five years of residence, counting temporary and definitive residence.
