For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Where required, a 'consulted visa' is stamped at a Salvadoran consulate chosen by the traveller. Travellers holding a US, Canadian or Schengen visa valid at least six months before the planned entry instead contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa desk for a consular visa. The official source does not state which nationalities need a consulted visa.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Apply to DGME four to six weeks before entry; the fee paid is non-refundable, and admitting the documents does not guarantee the visa. In-person advice is available at the DGME Visas and Extensions Department (Final Paseo General Escalón y Avenida Masferrer No. 5019, San Salvador) or visas@migracion.gob.sv.
