What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The tourist visa is valid for 90 days counted from entry into Ecuador and can be extended by up to 90 additional continuous days on request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility. In no case may a foreign national stay as a temporary visitor for more than 180 days in one chronological year; beyond that, a visa issued by the Ministry is needed to enter.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Round-trip travel itinerary and tickets are a required document, alongside proof of lawful means of subsistence, a valid passport (minimum 6 months) and a criminal-record certificate from the country of origin or of residence in the last 5 years.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Tourist visas may be granted by the human-mobility authority either in Ecuadorian territory or at consular offices. Applicants need the visa application form and regular current stay in the country of application and, if applying inside Ecuador, a registered entry through an official checkpoint and regular migratory status. Fees are USD 50.00 (application) and USD 30.00 (authorised visa); Colombians pay only the application fee. The visa can be extended by up to 90 additional continuous days on request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility; holders may change migratory category but may not work or carry out economic activities until a new visa is obtained.
