How long is the status granted, what is required for renewal, what physical-presence obligations matter, and what longer-term residence direction exists?

Temporary residences can be renewed multiple times. Longer term, 21 continuous months as a resident, with the application filed before the residence expires, can lead to permanent residence; for continuity of that period the holder may not be absent for more than 90 days during the whole validity of the temporary residence visa.
