Which remote workers qualify: foreign employees, freelancers, company owners or other remote professionals?

This temporary-residence route is for a foreign national who owns a company abroad or works remotely for one or more foreign legal or natural persons, providing professional or service activities digitally or by telework.

What income threshold applies, how must it be demonstrated, and how does family affect it where stated?

The regulation requires foreign-source income of at least three Basic Salaries per month for the three months before applying, or a total of 36 Basic Salaries per year, supported by international bank statements showing that income. The holder must show USD 250 additional monthly income for each adult child sheltered as a dependant.

The work or services must be supplied remotely for an employer, client or company domiciled abroad. An applicant may also qualify by documenting ownership of a company registered and domiciled abroad. The official source does not state whether local work in Ecuador is restricted.

Can family accompany? How long is the status granted and can it be renewed?

As a temporary-residence holder, the remote worker may request dependant ('amparo') status for their children, spouse or legally recognised de facto partner; the dependant status lasts as long as the holder's temporary residence visa and can be renewed along with it, and the holder must show USD 250 additional monthly income for each adult child sheltered. Temporary residences can be renewed multiple times. The official source does not state the length of the digital-nomad temporary residence.
