For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Eligible family members accompanying or joining an EU citizen exercising free movement in Denmark have their visa application processed under EU rules, by the diplomatic mission without a processing fee and under a faster procedure (longer than 15 days only in exceptional cases); not available if the person joined is a third-country national. Holders of a residence card under Directive 2004/38/EC Articles 10 and 20 need no visa.

The route covers travel by a family member accompanying or joining an EU citizen exercising free movement in Denmark, or returning with a Danish family member to take up residence in Denmark. Covered family members are: spouse; cohabiting partner aged 18+; direct descendants under 21, or over 21 if dependent; dependent relatives in the ascending line; and other family members who are dependent or household members, or whose serious health issues require the EU/Danish citizen's personal care.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

No travel health insurance documentation and no proof of funds for the stay are required for an EU-rules visa application. The applicant must document that the EU citizen has exercised or plans to exercise free movement in connection with entry and residence in Denmark, and that the applicant falls within a covered family-member category.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The application is processed by the diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate general) without a processing fee under a faster procedure that only exceptionally takes longer than 15 days; a visa is normally issued unless the applicant threatens public order, security or health. If the mission finds the applicant not covered or is uncertain, the case goes to the Danish Immigration Service; if refused as not covered, a new application can be made under the general visa rules. The official source does not state whether or how a stay on this visa can be extended.
