What qualifying residence period is required and when does the period begin?

Which types of residence count fully, partially or not at all where the official rules specify this?

Residence on permits under Aliens Act ss. 7-9 f, 9 i-9 n, 9 p (and others listed) counts, including multiple permits in sequence (e.g. au pair then family-reunified spouse); Ukraine and Afghanistan special-act residence does not count; periods based on different spouses/partners cannot be combined.

What absence/continuity rules affect accumulation of the qualifying residence period?

Residence must be uninterrupted; applying for an extension or permanent residence after the current permit expires risks the count restarting; normally one must reside in Denmark at decision time. No specific travel-absence limits are stated.

What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?

Basic requirements include: over 18; a sentence of more than six months' incarceration makes one permanently ineligible; no overdue public debts; no social benefits under the Active Social Policy Act or Integration Act within four years before applying; Danish test 2 or equivalent; acceptance of a declaration of residence and self-support; at least 3 years and 6 months of regular full-time employment or self-employment in the 4 years before the decision; plus at least 2 of 4 supplementary requirements (Danish test 3; 4 years of regular full-time employment or self-employment within the 4 years and 6 months before the decision; active citizen exam or active citizenship; annual taxable income of DKK 346,155.57 (2026 level) or more for the 2 years before the decision). The permanent permit can lapse if the holder no longer maintains a residence and leaves Denmark, or stays outside Denmark for more than 12 months in a row.
