What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A humanitarian residence permit under Aliens Act s. 9b(1), granted only exceptionally when significant humanitarian considerations warrant it.

See recorded sources

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Registered asylum seekers in Denmark in very special situations, e.g. a very serious treatment-requiring illness (untreatable in the home country), risk of deterioration of a serious handicap, or families with young children from a nation at war.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

An application to the Ministry of Immigration and Integration using the Ministry's application form, possible once the Immigration Service decides to process the asylum case in Denmark and the authorities have information about the applicant's residence.

See recorded sources

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

No right to stay while the Ministry processes the humanitarian application, except under very special circumstances, though the applicant may stay while the asylum case is pending; the Ministry requests the asylum case file and requires up-to-date medical documentation for health grounds.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Applications go to the Ministry (Slotsholmsgade 10, 1216 Copenhagen K, or by email to uim@uim.dk); its ruling is final and cannot be appealed to any other administrative authority.
